Reducing construction waste through circular economy: the commitment of Eurac Research in Trentino-South Tyrol
The Trentino-South Tyrol region (Italy) generates over three million tons of construction and demolition waste annually, much of which could be reduced through circular economy practices.
A study by Martino Gubert, engineer and researcher at Eurac Research's Institute for Renewable Energy, surveyed local construction companies about their interest in reusing materials. Although many were open to the idea, they cited obstacles like legal uncertainty, cost concerns, and lack of incentives.
The circular economy emphasises reusing, repairing, and recycling materials, particularly in construction. Eurac Research's Circular Lab supports small and medium businesses in adopting these practices by offering training, design improvements, and dismantling techniques to create sustainable, resource-efficient building systems.
