Segrate, a town in Milan's Metropolitan City, is transforming into an 'energy island' through the RENergetic project, part of the EU's Horizon 2020 initiative.
This project connects five public buildings, including the town hall and schools, to share and distribute self-generated energy, aiming to reduce energy consumption by 40%, equivalent to planting 800 trees over 20 years.
The initiative also emphasises community involvement, with educational programmes and interactive dashboards to engage locals, particularly students, in energy management.
Segrate's holistic approach, combining technology, data, and citizen engagement, serves as a model for other cities.
