Solar power for global health

How photovoltaic modules could provide energy to poorer countries' hospitals
Editorial Team

According to WHO’s Energising Health: Accelerating Electricity Access in Healthcare Facilities report, approximately 1 billion people lack access to a healthcare facility with stable electricity, posing risks to patients, particularly in maternal and surgical cases.

Experts argue that the solar electrification plan, coupled with the decreasing cost of photovoltaic modules and batteries, is a cost-effective and timely solution. With advancements in solar technology, swift deployment of reliable solar energy systems in healthcare facilities could become a reality in a short time.

Experts are urging Cop28 delegates to commit less than $5bn to electrify all healthcare facilities in poorer countries using solar energy, potentially saving countless lives.
