Solar energy is gaining strong momentum across the EU, now accounting for 10% of electricity generation and expected to reach 700 GW by 2030. It is safe, accessible, compatible with biodiversity, and a cornerstone of the energy transition.
Solar energy has firmly established itself as one of the fastest-growing sources of renewable power in the European Union, now accounting for 10% of the bloc’s electricity generation and reaching even higher shares in countries such as Greece, Spain and Germany.
Between 2022 and 2024, nearly 150 GW of new capacity were added—enough to power approximately 42 million households—and a further 70 GW is expected in 2025. This expansion is driven by the momentum of the European Green Deal and the EU Solar Energy Strategy, which sets a target of at least 700 GW of installed capacity by 2030.
Beyond its climate contribution, solar energy strengthens Europe’s energy security and reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels. However, myths surrounding its reliability and safety persist. The article clarifies that photovoltaic systems are highly safe, with incident rates significantly lower than those of common household appliances. Moreover, all panels must comply with stringent EU safety standards. Solar energy is not only clean and accessible—it is also a key tool for empowering consumers and stabilising energy costs.
