Urgent need for sustainable urban cooling in record-breaking heat

Record-breaking heat in 2023 highlights the urgent need for sustainable urban cooling solutions and effective governance to protect vulnerable populations and create resilient cities.

2023 saw record-high temperatures, with a 52% rise in days over 35°C in major cities over three decades, critically impacting 815 million urban dwellers in poorer regions.

Delhi experienced extreme heat, closing schools and stressing water and electricity resources.

Sustainable cooling initiatives, supported by UNEP and partners, aim to mitigate such impacts. Strategies include nature-based solutions, like Medellín's 'Green Corridors,' and passive cooling methods, such as cool roofs

Cities must enhance heat adaptive capacities, including cooling centres and data-driven risk assessments. Effective governance, exemplified by Chief Heat Officers, is essential for implementing these urban cooling strategies and creating resilient cities.
