Vienna´s journey towards decarbonisation

The city of Vienna has developed an ambitious plan to phase-out greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
Giulia Leghissa

As winter approaches, Vienna focuses on energy efficiency and a reliable energy supply, which is part of its climate-neutrality strategy. Last winter's energy crisis prompted accelerated efforts to decarbonise the city's heating system, emphasising the need to eliminate gas reliance. Since 2006, Vienna committed to energy efficiency, evolving in 2019 to prioritise decarbonisation and renewables integration. During the crisis, voluntary energy-saving measures were implemented, accompanied by awareness campaigns.

Vienna plans to maintain energy savings for the upcoming winter, testing infrastructure resilience. Phasing out gas remains a top priority, necessitating national legislative support. Future challenges include developing cooling strategies for hotter summers while ensuring energy efficiency.
