What is the role of timber construction to reach net zero?

Editorial Team

Buildings are responsible for approximately 40% global CO2 emissions, which should be halved to reach the net zero emissions targets by 2050. Energy-intensive materials used in construction are responsible for these emissions, such as cement, whereas increasing the use of timber and wood can help for decarbonisation of the sector.

In fact, life-cycle assessment studies have found out that timber products absorb and store more carbon than is emitted through their production. Hence, they can actively reduce carbon emissions.

There is a clear need to deliver more energy efficient houses, retrofit solutions and carbon-neutral public sector buildings. There are several timber solutions to consider.
