Fostering energy communities: the case of Marseille

06 December 2023
The city of Marseille (France) is fostering an energy community through citizen-led initiatives and partnerships with local energy companies.
Editorial Team

Marseille is enhancing its renewable energy production through collaboration, focusing on energy communities. Partnering with local actors like Marseillia Sun Systems and Enercoop, the city aims for decentralised energy production and consumption within a one-kilometer radius. The Sirius project exemplifies this effort, targeting a 90% emission reduction, 80% heating consumption cut, and a 20% increase in renewable energy use.

Despite some challenges, the initiative introduces potential cost savings for citizens through local energy production. Marseille plans to institutionalise and expand energy communities, integrating renewables into the urban landscape and involving more local companies for a self-sustaining energy ecosystem.
