Heat mapping of Bilbao for a carbon-neutral future
Bilbao, once an industrial hub, has evolved into a service-oriented city, now striving for climate neutrality by 2050. With sustainability at its core, Bilbao has surpassed CO2 reduction targets through its Sustainable Energy Action Plan and now aims for a 55% reduction by 2030 under the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan.
Recognising buildings' significant energy consumption, Bilbao prioritises upgrades, especially in areas conducive to district heating networks. The city's Heating and Cooling 2050 Plan envisions a fully electrified system by 2050, replacing fossil fuel combustion with electric heat sources and emphasising low-temperature networks to meet evolving heating and cooling demands amidst climate change.
