The Stanford Graduate School of Education's (GSE) construction project emphasises sustainability through historic preservation and modern efficiency.

The project retains significant elements of the 1930s north building, including its structure and materials, to minimise waste and conserve embodied energy

Renovations and new constructions, such as the Barnum Centre and the adjacent south building, prioritise energy efficiency by integrating advanced hydronic radiant cooling systems and connecting to a campus-wide hot water network.

Social sustainability is addressed by ensuring workspaces have ample natural light and outdoor access, enhancing overall well-being. The design respects historical elements while transitioning smoothly to modern features.
