MODERATE project
The lack of interoperability between datasets is a current problem, and it also applies to buildings. In this respect, the MODERATE project aims to develop an open marketplace so that data owners can reliably share their data.
The MODERATE project responds to a growing challenge in the construction sector: while buildings are increasingly equipped with monitoring and control systems that generate valuable performance data, this information remains scattered across incompatible platforms. MODERATE aims to overcome this fragmentation by establishing procedures and technologies that allow building owners, policymakers, facility managers, and utilities to share data securely, extract insights, and make informed decisions. Crucially, the project ensures full compliance with data‑protection requirements such as the GDPR, while enabling uniform access to heterogeneous datasets that are currently locked in isolated silos.
To achieve this, MODERATE is developing a fully open platform that integrates advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, and distributed ledger systems. A key innovation is the use of synthetic data generation, which allows data to be shared openly without compromising privacy or statistical value. By addressing long‑standing gaps—such as the lack of GDPR‑compliant anonymisation protocols, incentives for data owners, and open access to tools and results—MODERATE will unlock new business opportunities and support more reliable, data‑driven services across the building sector.
