Building a circular economy in the built environment

Building a circular economy in the built environment
Circular economy is a priority to ensure the long-term sustainability of our planet. This applies also to the built environment:the built sector has a significant impact on the planet, as it is responsible for a large share of material extraction, natural resource use, land system change, habitat destruction, water stress, biodiversity loss, climate change, and carbon emissions.
Given its size and longevity, the built environment has a unique opportunity to contribute to the circular economy, according to the new report titled "Our Shared Understanding: A Circular Economy in the Built Environment".
By embracing circular economy principles, building owners, construction contractors, and industry stakeholders can collectively work towards a more sustainable and resilient future. To maximize the potential of the circular economy, the built environment must not only focus on materials and products but also aim to extract the greatest value from assets and systems, while considering social, environmental, and economic outcomes.
