Buildings climate tracker reveals slow progress toward Italy’s climate goals

20 March 2025
Italy’s building sector is off track for 2030 and 2050 climate goals, needing faster CO2 reductions, renewable energy expansion, and targeted renovations despite increased investments.
Luca Papapietro

The Italian Buildings Climate Tracker (ITA BCT) assesses Italy’s progress in decarbonising its building sector through four key indicators: CO2 emissions, energy consumption, renewable energy share, and renovation investments.

While CO2 emissions dropped by 12.4% and energy consumption by 3%, both fell short of targets. Renewable energy use increased slightly, but far below expectations. Renovation investments surged, yet their impact remains unclear.

To meet 2050 climate goals, Italy must accelerate CO2 reductions, expand renewables, target inefficient buildings, and implement the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. Current progress is insufficient, demanding urgent and stronger action to avoid severe environmental and economic risks.
