City toolkit for local governments to accelerate the green transition

Six key tools for local governments are presented to support them in achieving a sustainable future of the built environment and society.
Giulia Leghissa

Local governments worldwide are implementing policies to decarbonise the built environment, addressing 37% of global energy-related carbon emissions. However, the social impacts of these initiatives vary, leading to inequalities. This publication outlines six key tools for local governments to simultaneously reduce carbon emissions and tackle inequality. From building retrofits to nature-based solutions, the toolkit provides also policy recommendations and global examples. In doing so, it emphasises the importance of human rights, just transition principles, and circular economy practices in creating sustainable and inclusive cities.
