The crucial role of local governments in implementing the European green deal

The publication underscores the significance of local authorities in realising the European Commission's vision of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Crucial contribution also needed in the building sector.

The European Green Deal, aligning with the Paris Agreement, targets EU climate neutrality by 2050, with an interim goal of a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The recently published report titled 'Cities in the European Green Deal - opportunities and responsibilities' underscores the vital role of local governments in the Green Deal, aiming to outline their new opportunities and obligations while raising awareness of their importance. Local governments are in fact intensively involved in several areas where the European initiative envisages concrete actions, including the building sector, as indicated, for example, by the energy performance of buildings directive.

This report is intended to support local policymakers who will have to revise existing laws and introduce new directives following the Green Deal.
