Drivers, challenges and solutions for circularity in building construction

29 May 2024
A framework for practitioners and policymakers for transitioning to circular construction.
Editorial Team

A new study identifies the main drivers, barriers, and strategies for enhancing material circularity in building construction. Key drivers include:

  • cost savings from reduced waste disposal costs

  • new business opportunities through circular economy models

  • improved resource efficiency via efficient design and production

The primary barriers hindering circularity are an immature marketplace for secondary products; the lack of regulations and police, and high implementation costs.

To overcome these challenges, the paper recommend establishing effective markets for secondary products, providing economic incentives like tax benefits, and integrating digital technologies such as BIM and material passports.
