Energy sharing for energy communities - a reference guide

10 June 2024
Energy sharing enables consumers to jointly operate renewable energy systems and access electricity at lower costs. The Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission published a guide that provides information on business models and regulatory approaches for energy communities.
Editorial Team

Previously, consumers needed a supplier to self-consume jointly produced energy, but now this can be done through collective investments, service agreements, or purchase agreements.

This practice is known as energy sharing and allows consumers to jointly operate renewable energy systems and access the generated electricity at lower costs.

The Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission (DG ENER) published a document intended to serve as a reference guide for energy communities planning to initiate energy sharing. It provides information and resources on various business models and regulatory approaches from different Member States.

The guide is not exhaustive and does not evaluate or endorse any specific approaches or solutions.
