Evaluating European green building tools: DGNB leads in meeting European Green Deal criteria

22 August 2024
The study found that DGNB is the most effective European green building tool in meeting European Green Deal criteria, with HQE and ITACA also performing well but with some limitations.

The construction industry has a significant environmental impact, prompting the development of green building assessment tools to meet sustainability goals

A study used Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) to evaluate European green building tools—ITACA, DGNB, HQE (utilised in Italy, Germany and France respectively) and SBTool (Portugal)—against the European Green Deal (EGD) criteria.

The DGNB tool was found to be the most balanced in aligning with EGD criteria, while HQE excelled in most areas except energy evaluation. ITACA closely followed DGNB but lacked focus on sustainable mobility, and SBTool, the basis for others, performed averagely.
