Green public procurement for the green transition

New policy brief on the potential of sustainable procurement practices
Editorial Team

Procurement can help driving sustainable practices and advancing the green transition in Europe. According to the newly released policy brief by Bellona, titled "The Case for Updating EU Procurement Policy", public procurement accounts for a substantial portion of GDP and global greenhouse gas emissions.

There is a need to strengthen green public procurement (GPP) by shifting from a compliance mindset to a strategic policy tool. The policy brief emphasizes the importance of establishing EU-wide, mandatory GPP criteria, enforcement mechanisms, and harmonization of policies to maximize the impact of procurement in promoting sustainability.

The policy brief can be read in its entirety on Bellona's website.
