How do occupants perceive and interact with a building?

In this article the author explains his personal research experience of building performance starting from building technologies and building science to a transdisciplinary approach understanding occupants´ perceptions and interaction with buildings.
Giulia Leghissa

In this article the author Andreas Wagner reminisces about his professional research career starting from research methods, data analysis and simulation on solar systems, particularly the study on solar facades and passive solar heating.

He then focused more on conceptual building design and approaches for integration, until delving into occupants´ behaviour and interactions with the built environment. Knowledge about the actual comfort needs and behaviour of users is still insufficient, although there is research and projects addressing this aspect. He states that occupants´ interactions have to be part of an "integrated building concept", but avoiding over-engineering buildings.
