Hygrothermal performance of bio-based walls

How successful are bio-based insulations in wall constructions?
Editorial Team

Bio-based construction materials are an interesting solution to diminish the environmental impact of the construction industry. Moreover, many bio-based materials have interesting hygroscopic properties which can help isolate buildings.

The study Hygrothermal Performance of Bio-Based Exterior Wall Constructions and Their Resilience under Air Leakage and Moisture Load explores the hygrothermal performance of bio-based exterior walls, focusing on their resilience under air leakage and moisture loads. The research investigates the performance of chopped straw, sheep's wool, and cellulose-insulated timber frame walls compared to conventional mineral wool insulation.

The results reveal that bio-based insulations, particularly sheep's wool and cellulose, exhibit remarkable fault tolerance, maintaining lower indoor humidity levels even with defects in the airtight layer.
