Industrialised construction: the future for a growing population?

17 September 2024
Given the challenge of housing over 8 billion people sustainably, the study finds that industrialised methods, particularly the MDR modular system, offer better economic and environmental benefits than traditional construction.

The global population has exceeded 8 billion, creating significant challenges for housing and its environmental impact. To address these issues, the study evaluates various housing systems using the MIVES (“Modelo Integrado de Valor para una Evaluación Sostenible”) multicriteria decision-making method to determine their sustainability.

Industrialised construction techniques, such as modular and prefabricated systems, offer promising solutions by improving efficiency and reducing environmental impacts compared to traditional methods, which rely heavily on cement—a major CO2 emitter.

The study finds that the MDR modular system is economically favourable, while timber construction is the most environmentally friendly.

Overall, industrialised methods, particularly MDR, show better sustainability than traditional construction methods.
