Net Zero ambitions meet low carbon hurdles for UK schools

This summary underscores the pressing need for targeted interventions to overcome the technical, infrastructural, and financial hurdles in the drive towards full heat decarbonisation in UK schools.
Editorial Team

UK schools are firmly committed to achieving net zero, with 90% regarding it as a key priority and 99% having formal plans in place to reduce carbon emissions. However, a recent Baxi survey highlights significant challenges in decarbonising heating systems due to technical, financial, and infrastructure barriers.

Despite these obstacles, there is strong interest in innovation. Hybrid heat pump systems, which combine low carbon technology with existing boilers, are gaining traction. Notably, 93% of estates managers expressed a willingness to consider these systems and 80% of contractors would recommend them. However, the limited support for hybrid systems under the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) presents a policy gap that could stall wider adoption.
