Is net-zero embodied carbon a reality?
Embodied carbon, which refers to the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with building materials and construction processes, significantly contributes to building-related greenhouse gas emissions.
This research explores if ‘net-zero embodied carbon’ is achievable for multi-storey office buildings in Australia using life cycle assessment.
By comparing standard designs with ambitious ones—like using timber structures and alternative materials—the study finds that reductions of 17–45% are possible. True net-zero carbon is achievable temporarily, for up to 19 years, when considering biogenic emissions from timber and other biomaterials.
The paper introduces ‘temporal net-zero embodied carbon’ and addresses challenges in measurement and achieving large-scale reductions in the office sector.
