New IEA report with energy policy recommendations for Italy
IEA Releases Report with energy policy recommendations for Italy's energy transformation
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report offering energy policy recommendations to support Italy's energy transformation.
Italy aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and according to the report by IEA, is on track to meet its 2030 emissions reduction and energy efficiency targets. 2022 proven to be a crucial year, with steps taken to reduce reliance on Russian natural gas imports. However, Italy still relies heavily on import of natural gas for both heating and power: further measures to decrease dependance from natural gas will mean enhanced energy security and will help meet climate goals.
Regarding the building sector, Italy's effort to enhance energy efficiency has led to a significant decrease in energy demand in the buildings. This achievement can be attributed to various policy measures, including the successful super bonus scheme, which provides tax incentives for energy efficiency improvements. However, the IEA report highlights the need to address the disparities in benefiting from these measures across different socio-economic groups. To ensure inclusivity, the report recommends the implementation of targeted energy efficiency policies and instruments that specifically cater to the energy needs of vulnerable populations.
