Seismic safety and energy efficiency hand in hand: renovating through the EPBD recast

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) recast provides opportunities for integrating seismic safety and energy efficiency in building renovations, focusing on community engagement and EU policies, as demonstrated by the e-SAFE project for reinforced concrete buildings.
Luca Papapietro

The EPBD recast offers opportunities for earthquake-prone EU regions to combine seismic renovations with energy efficiency. A strong policy framework is needed to focus on the worst-performing buildings in both energy and seismic safety.

Social acceptance is key, which can be enhanced through co-design and participatory processes for multi-family building renovations.

The paper, 'Ensuring an integrated and inclusive approach to renovation', highlights EU policies and practical approaches for integrating seismic safety and energy efficiency.

It also discusses findings from the Catania e-SAFE pilot, emphasising early community engagement in decision-making. The e-SAFE project aims to create affordable, efficient renovation systems for reinforced concrete buildings.
