Social impact of the built environment

Social impact of the built environment
The built environment is fundamental to our cities and communities, providing shelter and space for people. It significantly influences social dynamics. Beyond individual users, the industry impacts human rights at every stage of the building lifecycle. This position paper introduces a novel approach to assessing social impacts in the built environment.
Using scopes similar to those in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, it aims to enhance understanding of the sector's social responsibilities among sustainability professionals. This model offers a comprehensive framework to consider social impacts across the built environment, emphasising the sector's role in ensuring human rights are upheld throughout the building and construction processes.
This document is intended for all stakeholders involved in the built environment, encompassing developers, investors, designers, owners, the construction sector, building users, infrastructure and public realm managers, as well as workers' organizations and businesses.
