Solar neighbourhoods: how to design them?

Ten questions for the effective planning and design

Editorial Team

A new study titled "Ten Questions Concerning Planning and Design Strategies for Solar Neighborhoods" has been published, providing a comprehensive exploration of planning and design considerations for solar-centric communities.

The research Explores the crucial intersection of active and passive solar systems in neighbourhood planning. The study defines what a solar neighbourhood is and proposes a classification into four types: pure solar neighbourhoodS, energy-centred solar neighbourhoods, carbon-centred solar neighbourhoods, and a combination of energy- and carbon-centred solar neighbourhoods.

Challenges to the adoption of solar strategies are highlighted, including social acceptability, competition for urban surfaces, and the profitability of passive solar interventions. Moreover, there is the need for regulatory frameworks concerning sunlight exploitation, shade access, and the impact of technologies on energy demand.
