Acceleration of F-gas phase-out

EU legislators are accelerating the phasing-out of the F-gas from heat pumps.
Giulia Leghissa

European legislators have agreed on an accelerated phase-out of fluorinated gases (F-gases), impacting the heat pump sector. While supporting a phase-out by 2050, the industry faces short-term challenges as production lines need adjustments in line with EU goals.

The new rules, effective from 2027, aim to make heat pumps cleaner but may slow down the shift away from fossil fuels in heating and cooling. To prevent shortages and encourage adoption, the EU must provide clear financial and policy support, promoting non-fluorinated refrigerants. Addressing distorted energy pricing favouring fossil gas and making heat pumps economically attractive is crucial for a swift energy transition.
