Canada leads the transition towards sustainable buildings with high-performance energy efficiency standards
Sustainable Buildings Canada (SBC), in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Building Officials Association (SBOA), has launched an initiative to accelerate the implementation of the National Energy Codes in single-family homes and commercial buildings. Through hands-on workshops held in February and March 2025, the initiative showcased high-performance solutions that demonstrate how even the most demanding energy efficiency levels can be achieved using currently available technologies and design practices. Funded by Natural Resources Canada’s Codes Acceleration Fund, the programme aims to support industry professionals in the transition towards more sustainable, resilient, and accessible buildings.
SBC’s approach responds not only to the urgent need for increased housing supply amid a national housing crisis, but also to the growing demand for buildings that reduce emissions, improve indoor air quality, and remain affordable to operate.
The workshops also addressed common challenges such as the perception of high costs and the lack of early coordination between designers and building authorities. According to organisers, fostering technical dialogue from the earliest design stages is key to avoiding delays and ensuring regulatory compliance, paving the way for a more efficient and healthier built environment.
