Actions to create a built environment sustainable for all

The built environment's high emissions necessitate urgent, equitable decarbonisation efforts that prioritise stakeholder inclusion and align with broader urban systems to create sustainable, resilient communities.
Luca Papapietro

The built environment significantly contributes to global energy emissions, primarily due to carbon-intensive materials and inefficient energy use. This situation is exacerbated by urbanisation and rising cooling demands, negatively impacting vulnerable communities through increased costs and health issues from pollution

To address these challenges, the COP28 Buildings Breakthrough agenda advocates for decarbonisation and resilience in buildings, emphasising equity and justice

Key actions for achieving an equitable transition feature inclusive stakeholder engagement, aligning urban systems, advancing multilevel governance, monitoring equity outcomes, and adapting global goals to local contexts.

This comprehensive approach aims to create sustainable, equitable built environments for all.
