Buildings are key to reach net zero emissions

In this commentary the active role of buildings in energy system is emphasised in order to reach net zero emissions.
Editorial Team

Buildings are central in the path towards lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reaching net zero. However, they should be transformed from passive and inefficient energy consumers into active participants in the energy transition.

In fact, buildings should be equipped with smart and digital technologies, be renovated through energy efficiency measures and the instalment of renewable energy and storage. This would allow buildings to interact with the grid and thus limit costly energy demand spikes, leading to empowered consumers who can manage the energy use and improve their thermal comfort.

Government policy packages are key to drive this transformation.
