The UK government aims to enhance construction training in traditional building methods to address workforce shortages hindering energy-efficient retrofits in listed and conservation-area homes. A joint review by three departments identifies the need for over 105,000 new workers, including electricians and plumbers, annually for three decades to achieve the 2050 net-zero target.

Consultancy Capital Economics emphasises the lack of skills in retrofitting historic buildings due to current construction training focusing on new builds and modern materials. The government plans to collaborate with training providers to integrate traditional building techniques into qualifications, aligning with ongoing reviews and initiatives addressing the skills gap. The review emphasises the economic potential of retrofitting, estimating £35 billion annual output and job creation while supporting net-zero goals.
