The challenge of decarbonising heating and cooling

Despite EU policies for decarbonisation, heating and cooling remains a challenge.
Editorial Team

Aurélie Beauvais, the managing director of Euroheat & Power, highlights the need for an energy system perspective in addressing the decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector.

Despite the Fit For 55 package setting ambitious targets for reducing CO2 emissions by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050, the heating and cooling sector remains a significant challenge. Nearly a third of the European Union's final energy demand comes from space and water heating, with over 75% still derived from fossil fuels.

Beauvais advocates for an integrated approach, leveraging renewable and excess heat sources, district heating and cooling, and clear EU regulations to achieve a resilient, decarbonised energy system by 2030.
