Coloured rooftops could help lower buildings´ temperature

Scientists are suggesting to try colouring rooftops in Barcelona as a way to fight heatwaves.

Researchers have come out with an interesting idea to help Barcelona fight against the heat island effect: colouring rooftops. In recent years, the city has seen a dramatic increase in temperatures due to climate change. Moreover, the existing building materials retain daytime solar radiation, making them a direct contributor to heating.

As a response to this problem, scientists are suggesting to paint the rooftops white. This intervention would reduce temperatures by up to 4.7 dregrees during heatwaves. The colour white, in fact, does not absorb the heat of the sun, but it can reflect the sunlight, leading to less heat gains.

If the solution will be applied, it will change forever the look of the city.
