Decarbonising high-rise buildings: NYSERDA's retrofit initiative

High-rise buildings in cold climates are tackling heating system decarbonisation challenges through NYSERDA's Empire Building Challenge and its Retrofit Playbook, aiming to promote sustainable practices across the real estate sector.

High-rise buildings in cold climates face significant challenges in decarbonising their heating systems. The New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) addresses these challenges through the Empire Building Challenge (EBC), investing $50 million in innovative retrofit designs.

Their new Retrofit Playbook for Large Buildings offers guidance on cost-effective decarbonisation strategies, emphasising energy efficiency, electrification, and tenant engagement.

Partnering with organizations like ULI, NYSERDA aims to disseminate these solutions across the real estate industry to meet New York's Climate Act goals, promoting collaborative efforts for sustainable building practices.
