Empowering energy communities: a path to a just energy transition in Europe

Renewable energy communities in Europe are emerging as a sustainable solution for affordable energy, with governments urged to support citizen involvement and overcome regulatory barriers to achieve a just energy transition and enhance energy access.

The rise of renewable energy communities in Europe offers a sustainable and affordable path towards a just energy transition amidst climate concerns and rising costs.

Currently, over 2,250 energy communities engage 1.5 million citizens in electricity production, with projections suggesting that by 2050, 83% of EU citizens could participate.

Governments are encouraged to support these initiatives, as demonstrated by Belgium's plans to expand offshore wind capacity, fostering citizen involvement through cooperatives.

However, challenges persist, such as regulatory barriers faced by energy communities in countries like Portugal. Addressing these issues and promoting collaboration is vital for achieving decarbonisation and enhancing energy access across Europe.
