Energy efficiency barriers in heritage buildings

The UK government has identified several barriers to implement energy efficiency technology and solutions in heritage buildings.

The UK government's recent review addresses challenges faced by owners of heritage-listed homes in enhancing energy efficiency. The report integrates insights from various stakeholders and highlights five key issues:

  • Delays in obtaining planning permissions for upgrades
  • a shortage of council capacity
  • a lack of skilled construction workers
  • confusing and contradictory information
  • high retrofitting costs were identified as major hurdles.

The review suggests addressing these challenges through improving digital information, promoting government advisory bodies, and supporting workforce training. Despite existing initiatives, the report calls for tailored measures to facilitate the energy efficiency upgrade of historic homes, acknowledging the unique challenges faced nationwide.
