Editorial Team

At the end of July the EU officially agreed on the legal framework of the recast of the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) as part of the Fit-for-55 package. This agreement represents a step closer of the EU to reach climate neutrality by 2050.

The upgraded legislation introduced a series of measures to accelerate the implementation of energy efficiency in buildings. EU countries will be legally required to prioritise energy efficiency in policymaking, planning and major investments, following the "energy efficiency first" principle. Moreover, EU countries agreed to almost double their energy savings in the upcoming years. Now the definition of energy poverty is also included in the legislation, making countries compelled to prioritise also low-income households, and social housing.
