Editorial Team

Alfonso Arroyo Gonzalez, FEDARENE Vice-President for Renewable Energy Sources, discusses about the renewable energy transition of the Autonomous Community of Castillia y León. The Community was the largest producer of coal in Spain but in 2018 coal mining was stopped. Now they produce 89% of electricity through renewable sources. It has been indeed the first Spanish region to install wind energy with over 6.5 GW and to foster PV energy implementation.

He also highlights the difficulties in finanding new source of investments in the old mining area, and the necessity to increase and improve the electricity interconnections between Iberia and the rest of the EU.
