Germany plans for fossil fuel heating

With the new draft law, Germany foresees that from 1 January 2024 only heating systems running at least 65% on renewable energy can be installed.

A new draft law in Germany aims at decarbonising the heating systems of buildings. Specifically, from 1 January 2024, only heating systems running 65% on renewable energy can be installed in all types of buildings (with some exceptions).

In most new buildings heat pumps have become the default heating technology and it will be limited to that from January 2024. Regarding existing buildings, in 2022 about 2/3 of sold heating systems were from fossil fuel, however from January 2024, when one of these old systems does not work anymore, it has to be replaced by heat pumps. This means that from 2024 not all heating systems from fossil fuel will be phased out, but only once they are not functioning anymore.
