The EEA report, 'Addressing the Environmental and Climate Footprint of Buildings', highlights that buildings account for over 30% of the EU's environmental impact and contribute significantly to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

To achieve sustainability by 2050, it emphasises renovating existing buildings with low-impact materials and enhancing climate resilience. The report advocates for buildings that promote energy efficiency, biodiversity, and affordable housing, supported by community participation and renovation subsidies

It acknowledges the need for a comprehensive EU building strategy while also highlighting initiatives such as the New European Bauhaus and the increased focus on housing through new policies and dedicated roles within the European Commission.
