Sarajevo, affected by severe air pollution, plans to fight the issue with a strategy targeting coal and solid fuel usage. Ranked 54th globally for air pollution, the city aims to align with European standards by slashing emissions from household heating by 90% in a decade. The plan involves subsidising energy efficiency upgrades in 20,000 homes and revitalising the chimney sweep sector.

Costing EUR 195 million, funding will be sourced domestically and internationally, including a World Bank loan. Expected to create jobs, the strategy was developed in collaboration with UNDP and financed by Sweden. Drafted by CETEOR and E3, the strategy will soon be made public.
