How pursuing energy efficiency generates more construction jobs

Pursuing green construction and energy efficiency can generate more construction jobs, but labour shortages and skills mismatches need to be tackled.

The 'Fit for 55' climate package, aiming for a 55% reduction in EU greenhouse-gas emissions by 2030, enhances renewable energy and efficiency targets, necessitating a profound overhaul of Europe's energy systems. Buildings, responsible for 40% of EU energy consumption, play a crucial role in achieving these goals.

Eurofound research suggests the construction sector will see significant employment growth, contributing 204,000 net new jobs by 2030. Despite widespread labour shortages in construction, the sector's pivotal role in retrofitting housing and building renewable infrastructure demands retraining and reskilling initiatives, essential for meeting the ambitious goals of the European Green Deal.
