The adoption of energy codes in building regulations is crucial to enhance resilience against extreme heat and cold exacerbated by climate change, as highlighted by the increasing frequency of power outages due to weather events. The passive survivability of buildings during such crises can be improved through energy codes mandating features like insulated windows and roof insulation. 

Studies show that buildings meeting code requirements remain habitable for longer periods during extreme weather events. Despite challenges in overhauling building codes, some regions have already incorporated guidelines for efficiency and resilience. A global effort, led by the International Energy Agency, aims to develop accessible pathways for efficient and resilient buildings, emphasising collaboration with specialists and nations experienced in energy codes.
