Linking smart technologies to energy efficiency in existing buildings

This interview with Jonathan Dixon explores the integration of home automation into Passivhaus retrofits.

In this interview, Jonathan Dixon talks about his housing journey, from a South London terrace to a Californian bungalow. This move led him to appreciate the challenges of keeping homes warm or cool. After experiencing Passivhaus principles in a colleague's retrofit project, he decided to undertake a deep retrofit himself. The key point of the retrofit was incorporating a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system and adopting home automation with a Loxone mini server.

Despite the pandemic's onset, he used the lockdown to experiment with the technology, ensuring compatibility with various components. Jonathan addressed construction challenges, opting for a cross wall construction method for improved insulation. The retrofit focused mainly on enhancing energy efficiency.
