More than 9000 energy communities in Europe

Editorial Team

The EU's "Clean Energy for all Europeans package" (CEP) aims to enhance energy markets and systems, introducing "active customers/consumers," and energy communities. With over 9,000 operational in the EU, energy communities like the RESCHOOL pilot in Amsterdam showcase localised energy generation which benefits 540 households. These initiatives offer stable prices amidst large-scale generation fluctuations, addressing concerns about business models.

A Eurobarometer survey reflects citizens' expectations for increased investments in renewables and energy efficiency, aligning with a surge in citizen-led projects supporting the energy transition. The Netherlands, with almost 700 energy communities, exemplifies this trend, emphasising collective efforts for a sustainable future and contributing to climate change mitigation.
