The need for more sustainable building insulation materials

14 November 2024
Plastic insulation materials are environmentally harmful due to high energy use and emissions, while natural fiber alternatives are more sustainable but face cost and technical challenges.

Building insulation materials, especially plastic-based ones like expanded polystyrene, significantly impact the environment due to high energy consumption and carbon emissions. Although inorganic insulations like fiberglass generate fewer emissions, they are less efficient and more expensive.

Plastic insulation materials are popular for their durability and low cost, but their recycling rates are low. Natural fiber insulations made from materials like coconut and hemp offer a more sustainable alternative, being renewable and biodegradable. However, cost, supply chain issues, and technical concerns hinder their widespread adoption.

Despite these challenges, growing environmental pressures may push for more sustainable solutions in the future.
