New recommendations from the Commission on tackling energy poverty
The European Commission addresses the rising issue of energy poverty affecting 9.3% of Europeans in 2022, up from 6.9% in 2021, due to high energy prices and a cost-of-living crisis. The Commission releases recommendations urging coordinated action by EU countries to combat energy poverty, emphasising investments in energy efficiency and renewables. These measures aim to address root causes such as low home and appliance energy performance, high energy expenses, and lower incomes exacerbated by inflation.
The documents aims to include these recommendations into National Energy and Climate Plans and Social Climate Plans, with a focus on fair energy transition and protection of vulnerable citizens. The initiative follows extensive consultations with stakeholders, aiming for enhanced consumer protection for the winter.
