The construction industry’s significant greenhouse gas emissions may be mitigated by using timber and clay, two of humanity's oldest building materials.
EMPA, a Swiss research group, is exploring this through the Think Earth project, which combines modern techniques with these materials to reduce environmental impact.
Timber provides strength, while clay offers heat regulation, vibration damping, and fire safety.
The project aims to increase wood reuse from 10% to 90% and incorporate biodegradable additives in clay to prevent shrinkage, enhancing sustainability.
